Independence Day
The flashes of light reflecting off his glasses and into his tired
eyes, recalling his military career as he watched the skies. His grandkids were
there in wide-eyed wonder, not yet understanding what it means, seeing the
explosions and hearing all this thunder. So, he took it upon himself to make
sure they knew, starting with what he experienced in a brief review.
He trained with the best, but he knew this would be tough, riding in
that Higgins boat and the seas, they were rough. Machine gun fire and
explosions had filled the air, cries of his brothers who had landed before them
and the ones around him in prayer. He never really considered himself a praying
man, but became one that day going up against Japan.
The danger was real, and death was in sight, but he knew in his heart
he was fighting for what was right. Their orders were clear and their target in
sight, Mount Suribachi would be taken with Gods help and strong American might.
He mustered up all his courage as they approached the beach, the door came open
with the sound of bullet pings and a screech. The bravest men both young and
old stormed the beach through the rain of fire and certain death bold. The ones
who remained had made their way to the enemy’s nest, where most of the gunfire
came from, the bulk of the contest. With the enemy removed and put to an open
shame, they planted the stars and stripes on the mountain they claimed.
So many that day had lost their lives, fighting for our freedom
against tyranny and strife. Take this day to celebrate the birth of this great
nation, providing an example for future generations. Don't take it for granted
and keep freedoms course remembering all gave some and some gave all this July
Fourth.
